Organisation Outline:
The GMGU (Greater Manchester Geological Unit) is a partnership organisation that provides geotechnical, environmental and planning consultancy services
within an academic environment. GMGU is located at the University of Manchester's Environment Centre and is jointly managed by the University and the Salford
City Council. GMGU supplies a range of services that includes strategic representation, training, impact assessment, site investigation and the supply of site-specific
information. A full list of services can be found on the website and includes: Strategic Planning & Representation, Site Investigations, Environmental Monitoring,
Enforcement Surveys, Topographical Surveys, Mine And Quarry Tip Inspections, Landfill Searches, Historic Land Use Searches, Urban Land Uses And Contaminated
Land Strategies. The GMGU has been providing local authority CPD courses since 1994. Most of the recent courses have concentrated on developing contaminated land skills
within the public sector and the introduction of the new contaminated land regime. However, other courses are now being programmed that should appeal to a wider
professional audience. The GMGU maintains an extensive archive, much of which is now in a digital format.
